  • The first ultrasound scanner was built in 1961 at the ultrasonics institute in the Commonwealth Department of Health by George Kossoff and David Robinson.

  • The first Black Box Flight Recorder recorded the pilot's voice and some instrument readings was invented in 1958 by Dr David Warren from Melbourne. It is now used in aircraft worldwide.

  • An Aboriginal inventor, David Unaipon, patented in 1909 an improved sheep shear.

  • The Sydney GPO had the world's first mechanised Letter Sorting Machine in 1930. It was developed by an engineer with the Postmaster General's Department.

  • The orbital internal combustion engine was developed in 1972 by engineer Ralph Sarich of Perth, Western Australia.

  • It's now the most popular form of house construction. But, since 1928 brick veneer cladding has changed the face of Australia's urban and rural environments.

  • The first full-size rotary hoe cultivator was developed in 1922 and used energy to turn the soil directly, rather than dragging a plough behind a tractor.

  • The Wiltshire Staysharp Knife - a knife sheath which sharpens the knife each time it was withdrawn - was invented in 1965.

  • Developed by Dr Saul Weiner, Redback Spider Antivenom was released in 1956.

  • In 1982, the dual flush toilet (dunny) was responsible for initial savings in excess of 32000 litres of water per household a year. Pretty important in a dry continent!
