  • The first ever radio lesson was broadcast from the Royal Flying Doctor Base in Alice Springs in 1950 on the School of the Air.

  • The Baby Safety Capsule was invented in 1983. Now, the Australian Standard for infant and child restraints is one of the most stringent in the world, demanding an extremely rigorous degree of protection.

  • The original heart pacemaker was invented by a doctor in 1926 from the Sydney Crown Street Women's Hospital.

  • The Victa Mower, a revolutionary two-stroke petrol lawnmower with rotary blades was much easier to use than its older push/pull cousins. It was invented in 1952 by Mervyn Victor Richardson, a salesman from Sydney.

  • A lightweight, fully-enclosed hybrid toilet system which needs no water and requires minimal maintenance was released in 1998.

  • Developed by Dr Saul Weiner, Redback Spider Antivenom was released in 1956.

  • The Wine Cask - a modern version of the traditional European wine 'bladder' (a leather pouch which collapses as the wine is poured, keeping air out) - was developed by Thomas Angove in 1965.

  • George Nicholas and Henry Woolf Smith produced a high-grade aspirin product in Melbourne called Aspro in 1915. It later took over the international market.

  • Automated betting at horse races was made possible with the Automatic Totalisator invented by George Julius in 1913.

  • The Surf Lifesaving Reel was first demonstrated at Bondi Beach in 1906. It was designed by Lyster Ormsby.
