  • Automated betting at horse races was made possible with the Automatic Totalisator invented by George Julius in 1913.

  • Racecam - the lightweight, fixed camera first used in car racing - was developed by Geoff Healey in 1979 and has changed sports broadcasting worldwide.

  • In Victoria, the first prototype of a solar water heating system was developed by the CSIRO in 1953

  • The radio telescope in Parkes, NSW, received and relayed to the world pictures of the first moon landing in 1969

  • The first Black Box Flight Recorder recorded the pilot's voice and some instrument readings was invented in 1958 by Dr David Warren from Melbourne. It is now used in aircraft worldwide.

  • In 1929, Alfred Traeger invented the Pedal Wireless - a pedal-operated generator which was connected to a wireless

  • The Pop Top Can idea of press-buttons on cans (where the button is hinged to the can) so it does not cause a litter problem, was developed by Sir Ian McLennan of BHP in 1973

  • Penicillin was trialled successfully on humans by Howard Florey, and went into production in 1941 to help victims of World War II.
